Surgical Orthodontics

Surgical Orthodontics Explained

Surgical orthodontics involves close coordination with oral and maxillofacial surgeons to treat complex craniofacial cases that involve the skull, face, jaw and mouth. Dr. Gianquinto has extensive experience managing complex surgical orthodontic cases through his experience and training at Children’s Hospital of Philadelphia, Naval Medical Center San Diego, and Thomas Jefferson University. Dr. G will ensure that if your treatment plan requires surgery, you will receive the best possible care.

Is It Right for Me?

Surgical orthodontics may be the best solution for adults with a history of abnormal jaw growth, improper bite, trauma or other aesthetic concerns, where the desired results cannot be achieved only through moving teeth. In order for jaw surgery to be effective and stable, jaw growth must be finished. This usually happens around age 16 in females and 18 in males.

During your consultation with Dr. Gianquinto, he will discuss your treatment options with you, and help you decide the best solution for your smile. The need for jaw surgery is rare, and there are often non-surgical alternatives depending on the severity of jaw misalignment.

The Surgical Orthodontics Process

Surgical orthodontic treatment requires close coordination of care between Dr. Gianquinto and your oral and maxillofacial surgeon. Together, they will determine what kind of surgical correction is needed to move the bones into place, and what kind of orthodontic treatment is needed to make the teeth fit the new jaw positions. Typically, you’ll start with braces or Invisalign to align the teeth for surgery.

Once your teeth are aligned, your oral and maxillofacial surgeon will perform your surgery in a hospital. After a few weeks of healing, Dr. G will “fine tune” your bite to match the new jaw position for 3 to 6 months after surgery, followed by retainers to help maintain your new smile.

For years I lived with a jaw problem that created issues for my teeth. After seeing many different orthodontists in town I found Dr. G and finally knew he could offer the help I needed. He referred me to an excellent surgeon and worked with him through the whole process. Everyone in his office is professional, kind, and thorough. I would recommend Dr. G to anyone in need of orthodontic treatment.
