Adult Orthodontics – Making the Best Choice for Your Treatment in Bakersfield

img_7332Orthodontic treatment isn’t just for kids. Teeth alignment can be improved at any age if the gums and bone structure are healthy! If you’re considering orthodontic treatment for yourself, choosing the right orthodontist is essential in achieving the results you’ve always wanted. Working with adults is different, and not every practice is equipped with the facilities or training to provide the specialized care that you deserve. In today’s esthetically-driven world, a great smile can open doors, and we’re here to help open them for you. A large percentage of our patients are adults, and they agree that it’s never too late to improve their greatest asset – their smile.

Cosmetic and Restorative Experience

Adults have often have an extensive dental history including expensive restorative dental work that presents challenges to orthodontic treatment. Many orthodontists will recommend that all existing dental work be replaced to fit their orthodontic treatment plan. As the saying goes, “If you’ve only worked with a hammer, everything is a nail.” In orthodontic terms, if you’ve only moved teeth and have not received advanced training in or performed complex restorative and cosmetic procedures, it’s difficult to coordinate treatment with dentists who do. You may want to ask any orthodontist you’re considering what kind of restorative and cosmetic dentistry experience they have outside of what was necessary to graduate from Dental School. If you have extensive restorative work, your orthodontist should present treatment options that can work with it or around it. More importantly, if tooth movement is needed as a part of your dentist’s complex restorative treatment plan, you’d probably be more comfortable trusting that essential piece of the puzzle to an orthodontist who has managed multidisciplinary treatment as well.

Treatment Options and Planning

Let’s face it. You want results, and you don’t want to wait for years and years to achieve them. Your orthodontist should be able to provide treatment options and realistic treatment goals that can be achieved in a specified amount of time, with appliances that work with your esthetic needs. Clear braces, Invisalign and lingual braces (braces on the back of the teeth) are excellent esthetic treatment options, but are not necessarily any faster on their own. Surgical procedures to shorten treatment time are available, and your orthodontist should be very familiar with them.

Office Design

If you’ve ever seen a grown-up squeeze into their child’s desk at school during Parent/Teacher night, you have a pretty good idea of what a visit to an orthodontists’ office may be like. Some offices just aren’t set up to see adult patients. Children do make up a majority of the orthodontic patient population, but that doesn’t mean your experience has to be like sitting at the kids’ table on Thanksgiving. Be sure to ask if the office has a “VIP” area for adults, or appointments available while kids are in school.

An Investment in You

Orthodontic treatment is affordable, and the benefits are tremendous. Straight teeth not only improve the appearance- they improve quality of life, and can reduce dental treatment costs in the future. When it comes to orthodontic treatment, age really isn’t a factor. A healthy bite and smile is just as important at age 60 as age 16. And unlike cosmetic treatment options such as veneers, your natural teeth are designed to last a lifetime.
